A question we hear often is, "How do I know what VA disability benefits I should apply for?" 

Everyone's claim is unique.  But generally speaking, military service of any kind is hard on the body and mind.

After dealing with hundreds of veterans' claims, the basic rule we've arrived at is this: Give yourself the benefit of the doubt. 

If you have any kind of physical or emotional problems now, there's a chance it could have had its start during your military service.   And if it did, it can be compensated under the VA rules.

The good news is that the hardest part may be the decision to file.  To file your claim, you have several choices:

• Contact a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) from a recognized veterans service organization such as Vietnam Veterans of America or Paralyzed Veterans of America .    The VA (1-800-827-1000) can provide the location of a VSO near you.   You can also check the VA website for a listing of nationally recognized Veterans Service Organizations.

• Contact your state or county veterans service office.  Check your phone book under government offices, or Google "county veterans service office" along with the name of your county.

• Call the VA at 1-800-827-1000 and tell the VA rep you want to file a claim for compensation and pension.

• Apply online through the VA website at http://vabenefits.vba.va.gov/vonapp.

Bottom Line:  Everyone's claim is unique, and the eligibility and application rules are complicated.  Unless you’re very good at dealing with lots of paperwork and complex issues, we recommend that you contact a qualified veterans service organization, or your local County Veterans Service Office.  This is a free service that’s paid for in part with VA funds.
